We may be living in dark times but that doesn’t mean we should give in or give up.

I’ve been noticing a disturbing trend, particularly in the creative circles I travel in, of people locked into despair, disassociation, distraction. I see this have less effect on one’s psyche in spaces where symptoms of stress are being shifted through physical activity and sound—manual labor, music, dance, sports.

It’s not as though gardeners, athletes and singers aren’t experiencing the same geopolitical chaos we are, but by constantly moving energy, it is harder to get stuck in stagnation.

Monks and gospel singers alike use their voices to lift spirits, to commune with a higher power, to offer prayer for a brighter reality in the here and now. If you watched the Grammy performances and/or Bad Bunny’s halftime show, perhaps you saw this type of transmutation in action.

We all have the ability to channel despair, disassociation and distraction into CONNECTION, JOY and COMPASSION. This is not some love and light the world is beautiful let’s be in a bubble of beauty spiritual bypassing bullshit I’m spewing.

We can be sad about the times we are living in, but we cannot let ourselves get stuck in the emotion.

The world is what it is and will continue to be. We should resist and organize—AND—remember to keep it kinetic so we don’t get sucked into the undertow.

I’m no expert in Traditional Chinese Medicine aka TCM, (I read Dr. Felice Chan on here, who is) but I swear by it’s efficacy for keeping the Qi (energy) flowing. TCM practitioners believe that intense emotions such as stress, anger or depression can cause stagnation in our bodies and minds. TCM uses acupuncture, herbs, diet and moxibustion to get things moving.

Creative expression, in all forms, especially when it involves sound or physical movement, can also shift our energy.

I’d like to offer suggestions to lift your/my/ our vibration from collective despair, disassociation, distraction to LOVE, which is a higher frequency for us to operate from.

Those of you who read about my recent trip to Japan may remember that I met a Buddhist monk who told me that he hated himself until he experienced a sliver of self love during meditation. With more meditation and practice he increased his vibration, using LOVE. From this place, he could move with assurance and purpose.

Vietnamese monk and poet, Thích Nhất Hạnh said:

“Love is the capacity to take care, to protect, to nourish. If you are not capable of generating that kind of energy toward yourself — if you are not capable of taking care of yourself, of nourishing yourself, of protecting yourself — it is very difficult to take care of another person.”

A photo I took of monks creating a mandala of colored sand at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, 2014. The next morning, they took it to the beach to let it wash away.

Whether taking care of another person or shifting the balance of good and evil on our planet, LOVE should be our guiding force.

You do not need to meditate or become a monk to harness LOVE.

LOVE is alchemy. LOVE has the power to transform our inner and outer world.

Instead of despair over the state of our country/ the world, TAP IN to RAGE, which can be channeled as creativity. Think of Kali, the Hindu goddess who is the embodiment of destruction and creativity, transformation and rebirth. She destroys the old to create room for new. So should we. If you don’t have an artistic outlet for your anger, play basketball, hit a baseball, a tennis ball, a punching bag, a hockey puck, pirouette, head bang your way to oblivion, sweat it out, MOVE.

Instead of disassociating, tuning out because it’s all too much to bear, let out a SCREAM, a SOB, a long SIGHHHHH. Get that stagnancy up and out of you, shake it loose. Put on a playlist and SING. SHAKE YOUR ASS. Have an orgasm, whatever you need to release stagnation. Bonus points for doing all of these simultaneously.

Instead of distraction via endless doom scrolling, DISCONNECT from your devices (if only for a few hours.) DELETE ChatGPT (why put more money in evil tech billionaire’s pockets,) and tune in, turn on to life in the real world. During the Civil Rights Movement and anti-war protests of the 1960s, community activation and activism was the mode. In 1966-67, hippies held “Love-in” gatherings to peacefully protest the Vietnam War, marked by music, meditation, recreational drugs and free love. The Black Panthers started their Free Breakfast Program in 1969, serving meals for children in underserved communities before school. Let’s look to the past and choose participation, connection, community over any of the dreaded D’s (despair, disassociation, distraction.)

I’m tired of seeing myself and others in a fugue state, checked out or locked into nervous system overdrive. If this is a marathon for the fate of humanity let’s pause, refuel and raise our vibration, collectively. LOVE is the highest frequency. We may not reach enlightenment in this lifetime but we can aim to stay out of anger, fear and apathy.

Even if you don’t go for the woo woo, what do you have to lose by tuning in and turning on to LOVE? Especially this week, especially this year, especially this decade, especially NOW.

Love you, mean it!
